How did Anthony’s Nose Get It’s Name?

There are several theories as to how the name for this peak came about. In one version, the peak was named in 1697 after a sea captain, Anthony Hogan.  When sailing past this mountain, one of the sailors on the ship compared the peak to the captain’s nose. In another version, the summit was named after Antony Van Corlear, a trumpeter on Hendry Hudson’s ship. A third version attributes the name to Anthony de Hooges, a deacon of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Our Impressions of Anthony’s Nose Hike

This was our first full weekend together. We decided to get our feet wet at hiking.

Sheldon wanted to test my fitness abilities and took me on a 5 mile run in the morning. As a reward, he cooked me a delicious Jamaican breakfast of fried plantains. Then, we headed out on our first or many hiking expeditions. We started huffing and puffing after only 20 minutes but the rewards were well worth it. The experience was challenging for our fit bodies and the views were breathtaking.

Our first shock of the day was witnessing people running up and down mountains with babies in baby carriers. It can seem reckless to an inexperienced hiker but after a few hikes, seems like a completely normal, fun, and wonderful family excursion.

We realized that, aside from babies, dogs are wonderful hiking companions. Some of them are carried like babies in carriers whiles others carry their own water and snacks in doggy hiking backpacks.

Being a city girl all my life, I was mesmerized by every spider I encountered on the way. I did not get too many opportunities to inspect these beautiful creatures in their natural habitats, instead, being more used to city dwelling creatures such as roaches, ants, flies, and mosquitoes.

Thank you Anthony’s Nose – you hooked us on hiking.
